I have no idea what I'm going to do with this thing, even if it's just for following, I'll never be able to keep up with the pace of tumblr but whatever, I've got one now: quinndominion.tumblr.com

I just had such an impulse to post some old Pleasantview pics I stumbled across and I didn't want to post them here, not only is it more of a hassle for just a pic-dump but I'd be too tempted to put words to the pictures. Yes, words are my thing, and I still ended up captioning the photoset for my one and only tumblr post thus far, but I'm aiming to wean myself off of them for these updates. I don't know how that's going to work out, the last one, Garden Party, was pretty perfect as a candidate for experimenting with a pics only format - well, not "only" but with minimal commentary, but that didn't work out at all. I also don't want to shortchange the rest of the families in this round, particularly since I'm still technically in the middle of the Hart update, they've got a Part III still to come and it would be weird to just not write the rest of it. Plenty can be communicated with just the showing but the way I played it means it also requires some telling. Proxy, for instance...no one will have a clue what she said if I don't tell you and it does kind of matter, so we'll see.

More bacc-ing, less story? I think that's the way I'm leaning. Of course, when it comes to actually playing that way I doubt that I could or would but for the post updates that could work. Anyway, this simblr-ing could be useful for showing me how well I like keeping it short and sweet, just sticking to the highlights.

Bonus Proxy pics. Just cuz. I love that temperamental little bear cub :-D

(As for the next Widespot chapter, though, I...wouldn't expect to see that before July.)

But I like your words...

Thanks, but something's got to give. If I can't streamline the process then maybe a radical change in the end product is the ticket. Who knows.

Well, if it takes till July, then, it does. Part of your problem is LJ and its character limits and the absurdities of HTML. It's one thing to have a word limit keeping the flab out, and it's another having to sweat the apostrophes. That's a waste of your time. Tumblr won't help with that - its got its own severe limitations as a storytelling medium. Although I have yet to hit a character limit, and it works well for what I'm doing, which is very different from what you're doing.

So I don't know what you should do. And cutting some wordage may be in the cards - but I personally would rather see a similar number of words over a larger number of posts. I can't read pure picture posts. I just can't. I don't read graphics well, though it's not quite as drastic as my inability to listen to music without lyrics. I must have text. And besides, you do their voices so well! In normal text dialog takes up a lot less space than narrative, so that's something to consider - but it may not be as true with code.

But you'll do what's best for you, and quite right, too.

Summer will mean more time, period, but still none of which do I want to waste fighting with LJ. Annoyance over the last one lingers because I wasn't expecting it at all, there are significantly fewer pictures than recent updates. And after going over older chapters when putting together the TOC post, quite a few of which turned out to be several thousand characters larger yet post and accept minor edits just fine, it seems like LJ just really wasn't about this garden party. But it could also be a new trend, something done on their end during some so-called upgrade. The "Contrajocques" don't have nearly as many pics to sort (but still plenty) yet I want to give them a proper introduction so they're going to have to wait until I have both the leisure time and the will to write it up and wrangle the post into 'submission'.

I wouldn't even attempt to use tumblr for storytelling but it could possibly be useful for relieving the pressure on the sheer number of pics I cram into a chapter just because I like them.

Compared to sorting pics, the words take no time at all to pull together but they take up space and I feel like for this medium, this community/audience the words are what's expendable. Collapsing the narrative to the effect of 'and then Rich was thrown slightly off his game and started harassing Daytona about a necklace' isn't quite as compelling to me as elaborating how it played out but it does still get the point across.

But it would feel like the abridged version and would shortchange the characters. I once heard Valentine say that very few things in this life are necessary, and the sweet parts are all in the unnecessary.

That does sound like LJ did the usual "upgrade to something that doesn't work as well" business. I hate to suggest changing blogging platforms, and I don't know how you'd tell which one wouldn't straitjacket you like this without trying a bunch of them, which would be an enormous hassle - but I never have understood why LJ was so popular. Half the posts on it seem to be cursing it for making some unannounced change in how it works that makes it less convenient to use.

Coming back to this page makes me LOL, that Proxy frown is going to be family legend! When I was doing up the family photos I could hear her asking later on why Una's got all the pretty pictures - happy and smiling - and her baby pics are all of her scowling/screaming, or sleeping. It is what it is, kidlet, though she might be inclined to blame Ti-Ti. Depends on where they are by then.

The abridged version is very much what it would be, no way around that. A highlights reel, maybe. I don't know. Just keeping my options open.

I chose LJ because it was still active, though not as popular anymore, with simmers actually talking to one another about their posts. Sometimes. But sometimes still seemed like a better bet than the no times I was seeing on other platforms, so Livejournal it was. And I'm unlikely to make a switch because, well, I'm here now. Not unless they do something monumentally stupid or I lose the pics from the past few chapters because they take back or change the scrapbook feature again. That would piss me off enough to pack my bags.
